Sherlock

gracerising:

“It’s always definitely a love story. I don’t see why that means that sex has to be involved. What a weirdly sexualized world we live in where you insist they must be having sex as well. Why would they?” – Steven Moffat

Why? Well, because, Mr. Moffat, human beings are sexual. Love is an intimacy. Yes, god yes, I agree with the intellectual love and the emotional love between them and I understand how they need each other but that is obviously not all that is going on here. Love in this manner would come to a natural head at some point and both parties would not be able to get near each other without that beautiful tension we are seeing onscreen already becoming much too obvious and intense to ignore. You say that Watson is just not wired in that way but you have given us John’s vulnerability. You have shown us that John is the key to Sherlock’s humanity. He makes him feel. You say that Sherlock was so infatuated with Irene that he could barely function in her presence, well, guess what? Although that aspect was endearing and entertaining to watch, we were all too involved watching John’s reactions to the two of them to really care what was going on with them, let alone to really want anything to transpire between them. We would have been devastated for John’s sake, of course, for he is Sherlock’s partner. There is no changing that now. You say that John is perfectly happy dating numerous women? Really? Is that what you call it? Maybe there is a communication breakdown somewhere between the writers and directors? What I saw was a slew of lovers he could care less for. He is in denial, and really doesn’t care when they leave him. What’s more, John is protective and jealous of Sherlock, as Sherlock is in return with him. This relationship is a love relationship. You yourself have admitted this. You said this is a love story. Amen. Thank you for that. You even said that love grows and sex sort of wanes. I absolutely agree. But it sounds as if you yourself may be too close to the source to see the problem clearly. What we are seeing here, what we have been given thus far is a growing love between two people. A powerful infatuation, yes, but I fail to see how you are drawing the line between deep infatuation and a love relationship? What I mean is that most definitely in an infatuated state we are, if only subconsciously, sexually attracted. Admiration, now, that can be quite different. I can admire and look up to my professor, for instance, and not “fancy” him, as you say. But I cannot be infatuated with someone, not in the way we are seeing here, and not be sexually attracted to them at some level. Now, let me explain why I believe you should give us a little more than it sounds like you’re willing to give. You have the opportunity here to do something extraordinary. To transcend the boundaries of mainstream TV as it stands today. You have the opportunity to give us a pining, longing, powerful and energy-charged love affair that will satisfy and amaze and knock the world on its ass. We don’t need to see sex. In fact, as long as it is acknowledged onscreen that this is a true love story, and that these two men have completely fallen for one another, it is alright if you even hint to the idea that it never actually comes to pass. In this way the longing/pining effect could conceivably be carried on indefinitely. But give us something. This is more than a brotherly love. This is much, much more than a best friend. You are doing a great job building up to it, but we would really appreciate something, some token if you will, before the third season is out. A kiss is too much to hope for I am sure, but wouldn’t that be one hell of a scene? The whole world’s mouth would drop open and we, the fans, would get teary eyed and clasp our hands together and say a whispered thank you, Mr. Moffat. Thank you for affirming our knowledge of what is going on inside their heads. No to the kiss? Fine. Give us this. Please, at least something comparable to this. Have Sherlock put his forehead on Johns. Have them both close their eyes. Have them be interrupted. There. That’s all we need. Just an affirmation, that is all. If you refuse to acknowledge this love affair then it doesn’t make any sense… all of this, this torrent of followers and all of us, from country to country on the edge of our seats to watch this develop… You have our attention, sir. You will have your following again in another 18 months. You have created us. You have done this to us. Please, god, don’t disappoint us. I am so afraid that if you back out on the intimacy factor now that in the end, despite the amazing storyline and the immense amount of talent driving this forward, that it will all eventually be remembered as… ordinary.

Wow. So eloquently put. Amazing.
